Ichiro Suzuki could reach the milestone of 3,000 career major league hits when the Miami Marlins play a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field starting on Monday. The 16-year major league veteran is two hits shy of the mark, which 29 other players have achieved. Suzuki, 42, eclipsed Pete Rose's career record with his 4,257th hit between the majors and Japan on June 15.

Baltimore is hoping Wade Miley can turn his solid July into a big finish with the AL East leaders. The Orioles acquired Miley in a trade with the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, giving manager Buck Showalter an experienced lefty for his rotation as the team tries to hold off Toronto and Boston for the division title. ''Wade Miley is a workhorse veteran left-handed starter who likes to pitch and compete,'' said Dan Duquette, the executive vice president of baseball operations for the Orioles.

The Boston Red Sox will be the cheerier and better-rested team when they open a series against the Seattle Mariners on Monday night at Safeco Field. The Red Sox capped a four-game split against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday afternoon, scoring five times in the ninth inning for a 5-3 win at Anaheim, Calif. The Mariners then played -- and blew -- the nationally televised Sunday night game at Wrigley Field.

The Cleveland Indians acquired left-handed All-Star reliever Andrew Miller from the New York Yankees on Sunday in a five-player trade to bolster their bullpen. In exchange, the Yankees received a package of four prospects -- outfielder Clint Frazier, left-hander Justus Sheffield and right-handed pitchers Ben Heller and J.P. Feyereisen. The Yankees had been entertaining offers for Miller after they traded closer Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs last week.

For the first time ever, the New York Mets and New York Yankees will play each other in August. For only the second time since interleague play began in 1997, the Mets (54-50) will take the field as the reigning National League champions. There will not be the same buzz this week that surrounded the regular-season games between New York's clubs in 2001, the year after the Yankees beat the Mets in five games in the first World Series pitting Big Apple teams against each other since 1956.

After Dee Gordon returned to the lineup last week, the Marlins are slated to get back first baseman Justin Bour to take on the National League Central-leading Cubs for three games starting on Monday night at Wrigley Field.

Watching a second straight loss to last-place Tampa Bay convinced the New York Yankees it was time to shift more fully into sell mode. Six days after trading closer Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs for four prospects, New York dealt reliever Andrew Miller to Cleveland for four more. ''We're trying to get back to a situation where we can build an uber team and a sustainable one,'' general manager Brian Cashman said.

With the Trade Deadline at 3 p.m. CT on Monday, the Cubs are looking at getting players healthy rather than adding anyone else to the roster.

In May, the Chicago White Sox were dreaming of a possible playoff race with three left-handers anchoring the starting rotation. One day away from the major-league trade deadline, Chicago is now a seller and uncertainty marks each of left-handers Carlos Rodon, Chris Sale and Jose Quintana. Brian Dozier hit two home runs to spoil Rodon's first start since July 5, and the Minnesota Twins handed the White Sox a 6-4 loss on Sunday.

Corey Kluber admitted there was an extra buzz in the Indians' clubhouse before Sunday's game against Oakland. ''There was definitely a good vibe,'' Kluber said after limiting the Athletics to five hits over seven innings in an 8-0 win. Cleveland's postseason hopes received a boost by acquiring All-Star Andrew Miller from the Yankees for four prospects.

With 12 years in the major leagues under his belt, Ervin Santana has learned to remain calm on the mound. Brian Dozier homered twice to support Santana's six innings as Minnesota beat the Chicago White Sox 6-4. Kennys Vargas hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run first inning for the Twins, who have won three of four games.
