Chicago Cubs Rumors - Mon, 07/01/2013 - 18:54
6:54pm: If the Dodgers get Marmol, the Cubs would pay most, if not all, of the $5MM owed to him tweets Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. The Cubs might also get a player recently removed from the Dodgers' roster. Gurnick doesn't specify, but the recently DFA'd Matt Guerrier would fit the bill. 4:27pm: The Dodgers are closing in on a trade to acquire Carlos Marmol from the Cubs, according to Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago. Marmol was designated for assignment by the Cubs last week. There are some hurdles left, as the Dodgers are on Marmol's limited no-trade list, and he's... Steve Adams

Rosenthal's Latest: M's, Yanks, Roenicke, Rays, Cubs

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Mon, 07/01/2013 - 11:59
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports has a lengthy new article discussing All-Stars, some of the game's top young hitters and a plethora of hot stove info. Here are some highlights... Rival executives around the league are critical of the Mariners for rushing their top prospects, but Rosenthal notes that Nick Franklin has been more than up to the challenge, and Brad Miller earned his promotion with his minor league performance. Regarding the struggling Mike Zunino, GM Jack Zduriencik told Rosenthal: We planned all along to get Mike to Seattle at some point in July ... He wasn't expected to be... Steve Adams

NL West Links: Puig, Feldman, Rockies, Francoeur

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Sun, 06/30/2013 - 21:16
The legend of Yasiel Puig added another chapter today as the Cuban phenom went 4-for-5, stole two bases and finished a homer shy of a cycle for the Dodgers in their 6-1 win over the Phillies. Puig collected 44 hits in June, the second-highest hit total in a calendar month for any rookie in MLB history --- the only rookie with more hits in a calendar month was a player you might've heard of by the name of Joe DiMaggio. Though the Dodgers are still just 38-43 on the season and in last place in the NL West, they're only... Mark Polishuk

Padres Notes: Arrieta, Garza, Peavy, Bullpen

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Sun, 06/30/2013 - 20:35
Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune discusses (or shoots down) some Padres trade possibilities in his weekly online chat with fans... The Padres are enamored with Orioles right-hander Jake Arrieta. Center reported last week that the Padres have been linked to Arrieta, and Center spoke to a pair of scouts this week who really love Arrieta's stuff and believe he could be a second or third starter in the right situation. Center hears that Arrieta and Matt Garza are the pitchers most associated with a potential Padres trade. Several teams are interested in Garza, though I'd argue the Padres... Mark Polishuk

Chicago Notes: Epstein, Soriano, Hahn, Konerko

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Sun, 06/30/2013 - 19:40
The Chicago Blackhawks recently bought the Stanley Cup back to the Windy City, but it seems awfully unlikely that either of Chicago's baseball teams will catch fire and add a World Series title to the city's list of sports championships. Both the Cubs and White Sox are seemingly looking ahead to 2014, as you'll see in this collection of Chicago baseball news... Cubs president Theo Epstein tells reporters (including Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune) that there is an even-money chance the Cubs will make a deal before the All-Star break. “Judging by the amount of calls that are going... Rosenthal On Rios, Pirates, Lucroy, Reds

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Sun, 06/30/2013 - 12:37
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports posted a brand new edition of Full Count. Here's a look at the highlights.. The Pirates should be in the market for a reliever, but their biggest need might be in right field where they rank last in the National League in OPS. The White Sox's Alex Rios would be perfect and he would form an extremely athletic outfield with Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte. However, Rios makes $12.5MM in each of the next two years and two other possibilities, Michael Morse and David DeJesus, are on the DL. The Bucs are in a tricky... Zach Links

Cafardo On Utley, Gonzalez, Crain, Yankees

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Sun, 06/30/2013 - 09:16
As impressive as young players like Manny Machado, Miguel Cabrera, Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, and Yasiel Puig have been, no one was more spectacular than young Alex Rodriguez, writes Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. However, A-Rod has since tarnished his legacy by being linked to performance enhancing drugs. It all comes back to Rodriguez's love of baseball, because for him, being the best was never good enough. Now he finds himself rehabbing from injury in Tampa, Florida and no one knows how it will play out. Rodriguez could retire because of a physical disability and collect the remaining $114MM... NL Notes: Byrd, Pirates, Dodgers, Gregg, Marlins

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Sat, 06/29/2013 - 21:57
With nearly half the season in the books, the Washington Post's Barry Svrluga took a look at the offseason's biggest bargains. He starts his list with Marlon Byrd of the Mets, who signed a minor league deal but has contributed 12 home runs and a .258/.309/.493 line in 237 plate appearances. The next player to get a nod in the article is the Pirates' Francisco Liriano, who inked an incentive-driven deal with Pittsburgh. He has been nothing short of stellar thus far, carrying a 2.30 ERA over 54 2/3 innings and 10.0 K/9 against 3.6 BB/9. Liriano's excellence has combined... Jeff Todd

Quick Hits: Konerko, Garza, Gonzalez, Yankees

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Sat, 06/29/2013 - 16:10
Paul Konerko isn't interested in discussing a potential trade from the White Sox to a contender, MLB.com's Scott Merkin reports on Twitter. I don’t know many teams that are going to want a guy who can’t play, the first baseman said. Konerko, 37, is nursing a back injury and hasn't played since June 23rd. As Merkin notes, Konerko has ten-and-five rights, meaning he cannot be traded without permission. The White Sox reportedly aren't interested in moving him anyway, even though they expect to be sellers at the deadline. Here's more from around baseball.. The Orioles are interested in the Cubs'... Olney On Diamondbacks, Cubs, Giants, Rays, Twins

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Sat, 06/29/2013 - 10:58
In a Twitter blitz this morning, ESPN.com's Buster Olney dropped several pieces of information about the developing non-waiver trade deadline market. (All Olney links via Twitter.) We learned on Thursday that the Diamondbacks are more interested in younger, high-upside, controlled starters like the Brewers' Yovani Gallardo and Cubs' Jeff Samardzija than short-term veteran rentals. Olney, who noted the Gallardo interest a week ago (on Insider), now adds that the Dbacks like the marketability of Gallardo's Mexican heritage. Olney also reports that Arizona had brief discussions with the Cubs regarding Samardzija. When the Cubs inquired into the availability of top Dbacks... Jeff Todd

Writing for the Biz of Baseball, Maury Brown discussed the decline in MLB and MiLB PED suspensions thus far in 2013. And as the Washington Post's Dave Sheinin reports, youth baseball is experiencing what could be an inner-city renaissance in... Jeff Todd

Deadline Notes: Starters, Astros, Utley, Braves, Perkins

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Fri, 06/28/2013 - 21:25
Let's have a look at the latest talk surrounding the approaching trade deadline season: Starting pitching is an active priority for the Orioles, writes Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun. Hurlers that the club is reportedly looking at include Ricky Nolasco (Marlins), Edinson Volquez and Andrew Cashner (Padres), Matt Garza and Scott Feldman (Cubs), Jake Peavy (White Sox), Bud Norris (Astros), and recent Oriole Joe Saunders (currently with the Mariners). The trouble for the O's, according to Connolly, will be coming up with enough prospects that the team can stomach dealing. The Giants are most interested in acquiring a starter... Jeff Todd

Draft News: Lanphere, Farinaro, Bryant

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Fri, 06/28/2013 - 16:18
Last night, the Pirates agreed to terms with first-rounder Austin Meadows. Here are today's draft-related news items and notable non-first-round signings... The Rangers have signed 21st-rounder Luke Lanphere for a $400K signing bonus, according to Baseball America's Jim Callis (Twitter link). That's $300K over-slot for Lanphere, a projectable high school right-hander out of California. The UC Riverside recruit's fastball touches 91 mph presently, according to Callis. Baseball America reports that Cardinals 11th-round pick Steven Farinaro signed for $750K, which is the largest bonus ever for a player drafted after the 10th round under the new CBA's rules. Because the assigned... Steve Adams

Matt Garza Rumors: Friday

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Fri, 06/28/2013 - 13:45
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported last night that the Nationals, Dodgers, Phillies, Orioles and Blue Jays were scouting Matt Garza in his dominant performance over the Brewers yesterday. Garza fired seven innings of one-run ball, allowing eight hits and a walk to go along with 10 strikeouts. He figures to be one of the most popular names on the trade market this summer. Here's the latest on the 29-year-old Garza... There's heavy traffic on Garza, who should be dealt well in advance of the July 31 non-waiver deadline, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe (on Twitter). Jon... Steve Adams

Rockies Interested In Gallardo, Garza, Gregg

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Fri, 06/28/2013 - 12:49
The Rockies are on the lookout for pitching help, and Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post writes that the team is aggressively scouting right-handers Yovani Gallardo and Matt Garza. The Rox are also taking a look at Kevin Gregg, writes Saunders. Vice president of baseball operations Bill Geivett declined to discuss the team's specific approach, nor would he discuss specific trade targets, but he did tell Saunders: I won't comment on anybody specifically. But we are going to watch them all. Colorado is also interested to see how Drew Pomeranz will fare following his most recent promotion. Pomeranz is scheduled... Steve Adams

Diamondbacks Interested In Gallardo, Samardzija

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Thu, 06/27/2013 - 23:01
While every other team in the division is interested in Ricky Nolasco, the Diamondbacks aren't interested because they prefer pitchers who are controlled beyond this season. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the D-Backs are interested in two pitchers in particular -- Yovani Gallardo and Jeff Samardzija. Gallardo figures to be available for the right price, but that's unlikely to be the case with Samardzija. Earlier this year it was reported that the Cubs view Samardzija as one of their upper-tier starters of the future, and Rosenthal echoes that, noting that it would require an overwhelming return. The Diamondbacks... Steve Adams

With the Cubs and Brewers both more than 14.5 games out of first place, the NL Central figures to be the source of plenty of rumors this summer. Both teams have an ample amount of trade chips that should ultimately exchange hands. Here's the latest out of the division... The Nationals, Dodgers, Phillies, Orioles and Blue Jays all had scouts on hand to watch Matt Garza's dominant start against the Brewers today, tweets MLB.com's Carrie Muskat. Braves Expected To Show Interest In Gregg

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Thu, 06/27/2013 - 10:24
The Braves are among the many teams expected to show interest in Cubs closer Kevin Gregg, writes MLB.com's Mark Bowman. Bowman notes that the righty closed for current Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez when both were with the Marlins in 2007-08. Gregg is just one of many relievers the Braves may be looking at as they pursue veteran help with Eric O'Flaherty and Jonny Venters out for the season. Gregg, 35, has become an unlikely asset for the Cubs, returning to their closer role and posting a 1.42 ERA, 9.2 K/9, 2.5 BB/9, 0.71 HR/9, and 36.5% groundball rate in 25... Tim Dierkes

Cubs, Kris Bryant Nowhere Close To Deal

Chicago Cubs Rumors - Wed, 06/26/2013 - 12:02
While the majority of first-round picks from this year's draft have agreed to terms or signed, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Cubs and No. 2 overall selection Kris Bryant are nowhere close to a deal. Bryant and adviser Scott Boras are seeking a bonus greater than the $6.7MM assigned pick value, while the Cubs are hoping to sign him for just over $6MM, according to Heyman. The Cubs could spend as much as $7MM on Bryant without forfeiting draft picks for 2014, but they can also point to the fact that No. 1 pick Mark Appel signed... Steve Adams
